Homestead

The hound-dog howled.  The front door slammed.  Hannah shot up, startled from sleep.  “What was that?!”

Her brother, Caleb, chuckled, “It’s a ghost. Now, go back to sleep.”

The next morning, Hannah rose with a sense of melancholy at being back at the homestead.  With their mama gone, she and Caleb must decide what to do with the property.  Coffee in hand, they made their way toward the porch. Hannah stopped abruptly, sharply inhaling.  Scratched into the wooden floor by the front door was the word Sell.

Peering over Hannah’s shoulder, Caleb shrugged, “I guess we have our answer.”

Or someone who wants to buy the house and wants to scare them out? I loved the story. It has a great ‘open’ ending…

  7. Sounds more like one of those real estate investors who reads the obits and preys on grieving families. Good story.
