His daughter, Lilith, sang, “Today’s Remembrance Day!”
Louis’s wife peeled the pillow from his face. “Chris set up the displays.”
Louis forced a smile. “Okay, let’s go check it out.”
Entering the Commons, Chris stood at the podium in front of a display of wood and shells. “Once a year we remember!”
Lilith skipped along the display tables.
Louis shuffled toward the changing rooms. He dressed into his suit and left through the airlocks. Walking the perimeter, he gazed over the scorched lands and sighed.
He remembered…the forests and the oceans before, teeming with life.
Now, a planet destroyed.

“Friday Fictioneers” is a weekly challenge hosted by the lovely Rochelle Wisoff Fields. This challenge is to write a story using only 100 words in response to a photo prompt. This week’s photo was taken by Sandra Cook.
It has been a lot of fun to join in with this fantastic and encouraging group of writers! For more stories, click HERE.
Very interesting read.

I guess it’s harder for those who remember what it used to be like.

I even find that to be so for my small life the older I get … “In the good old days.”

Dear Brenda,
Once more you’ve left me wondering. I wonder what the world is like for them in their present. Evocative and cautionary. Hope it’s not too late to keep this in the realm of fiction. Well done.
Shalom,
Rochelle

Thank you so much, Rochelle. I appreciate your encouragement on my writing. Coinciding with the photo this week was the return of the bad air we get here from across the border. Our flat overlooks the harbor and it seems at times we can see it rolling in. It makes you wonder about the future affects. Anyway, thanks again.

A Remembrance Day I hope never comes to life… Well done, Brenda. Love how the whole family is involved.

Thanks so much, Dale. For some reason it was exceptionally hard this week to cut the original draft of the story down to 100 words. Maybe too many characters, but I wanted the family involved. 🙂

For sure … some weeks I write, re-write, re-write, re-write then other weeks it seems so simple. Oh well, it’s a lot of fun! =)

A whole new meaning to Remembrance Day, like the one we have now, I wonder how long before the younger generations start to forget, not acknowledge and make the same mistakes…

Unfortunately, it’s true that we humans tend to forget the mistakes of the past far too easily.

A dystopian future. Chilling message, excellently written.

I think it would take a few generation and then the world that was before would seen strange and alien… then maybe when the forests come back we would seal ourselves inside

Oh how sad. I hope we never have to remember the feel of nature. Nice take on the prompt.

Same here, with the population growth and our use of natural resources. I guess we’ll see. I love to walk in the woods and enjoy the solitude, smells, and sounds. Thanks so much for commenting.

I was so happily drawn into Remembrance Day then left wondering how “the destruction” happened. Thank you.

Over time … it’s far in the future. The photo prompt coincided with the arrival of bad air here in Hong Kong from across the border. I often wonder what that is doing to our world. Complicated issues, I know. Thank you for commenting.

I wondered where you were going with this and then you revealed the awful truth – a remembering of a lost Earth. A sad future indeed. Well written tale, Brenda
