Thursday Doors: Family Home

If I summed up travel during this time, I would say, “Be prepared to hurry up in order to wait.”  Delay is the key word.  

In July, after my trial trip to Carcassonne (see post from last week) to reacquaint myself with the world outside my apartment, I boarded a bus in Perpignan, France for Barcelona, Spain. I caught a flight to the US to visit my family who I had not seen since the world turned upside down, since borders were closed and flights were cancelled hand over fist.  

The bus to Barcelona was two hours late.  The flight to Miami was delayed as a man had a hissy fit when boarding the plane and the flight attendant told him to pull his mask up over his nose.  It took a while for him to be escorted off.  Arriving late to Miami, I felt stressed that I would miss my connecting flight.  I didn’t need to worry.  My connecting flight to Atlanta was hours delayed.  I didn’t have any US dollars and all the currency exchange places closed early.  I was quite hungry by the time I arrived in Atlanta.  

So, if you’re doing the air travel thing during this time, I would suggest an extra measure of patience, a good book or two on your phone or Kindle, music to listen to, and snacks.

In 1950, my grandfather and father built this house, and over the years my family filled it with love.  My grandparents lived there, then my parents.  I have highlighted this home for “Thursday Doors” in the past, but I wanted to highlight it again. There has been a lot of change in the last year. A lot of work has been done to empty the house.  It was difficult to see. There is good news, though, as my sister and her husband have decided to move in, so the house will remain in the family!

I’ve run, skipped, trudged, and walked up and down this hallway a million times.
