Lean on Me

My friend gave me some good advice.  She told me to lean in, feel the wind on my face, and live life fully.  She also said, “You can have it all.”

I wondered.  What does it mean to have it all?

But, then, my friend fell.  I asked her to lean on me, and we would walk through the storm in her life together.  When she rebuffed my offer, it was my turn to give her some advice.  “To have it all means to lean in as you live with a willingness to lean on someone else when in need.”

~~

I’m feeling kind of philosophical, especially given the current state of the world.  One of my all-time favorite songs is “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers.  When I saw the photo, I couldn’t get it out of my mind.  Click here if you’d like to listen to this song.  Here’s another one, “Stand by Me,” a tune by Ben E. King.  Click here for another version which is sung by a wonderful group of artists.

And, remember, we all need someone to lean on sometimes!

Thank you for stopping by and reading my story which is my contribution to “Friday Fictioneers,” a weekly challenge hosted by the lovely Rochelle Wisoff Fields. With the help of a photo prompt to inspire, we’re to write a 100-word story.  The photo this week was provided by Anne Higa.

Wise words Brenda, we all need some level of support and can’t do it all on our own. As you say, in the world today, more so than ever.

Whenever I’m truly down, I start to sing “Lean on me”… and in my head I hear the voice of one of the firefighter “dad’s” from my youth and it helps a little. He was one of those people who was there when you needed him… just instinctively.

We are. Hubby is laid off as of 11th, but not all bad. The same day they laid him off he turned in resignation and starts new job on 14th. Only a weekend between jobs.

Indeed, asking for help or even admitting it’s needed is challenging. Nicely done.

    1. Very true. Being vulnerable with each other and accepting help is difficult, but it makes us stronger people. Thanks, Bill, for your thoughtful comment!

  10. Dear Brenda,

We do all need someone to lean on. Lucky is the person who has a good support system. Well done. I appreciate a writer who doesn’t go with the obvious. 😉

Beautifully done, Brenda. It is the hardest thing to lean on someone when you are usually the one who is leaned on…
