Thursday Doors: Across the Street in Catania

Here is my contribution to Thursday Doors, a weekly door-lover’s group hosted by Dan Antion over at No Facilities.

~~

This week I’m again featuring Catania, Sicily in Italy.  This wonderfully quirky building sat across the street from where my husband and I stayed.  It was our view for a month and inspired many a story.

Several times over the month, the woman who lived on the top floor would lower a basket by a rope to the street.  A little boy waited for the basket.  He took it and returned with various supplies inside.  He would then call up to the woman, “Hey, I’m back.  The basket is here.”  Or, that’s what I imagined he said.  He spoke in Italian.  The woman would lean over the railing, yell down to the street, “Ciao,” and haul the basket up.  I never had the nerve to take a photo of the woman releasing or pulling the rope, raising or lowering the basket. I don’t know why. I just didn’t.  You can see said basket in the corner of the top balcony with the bright orange flat.

It would also look better with some washing hanging as it is typical in Italy haha

    1. Yeah! I’m happy you enjoyed my little tale. I saw a number of buildings where someone would lower down a basket to a waiting person on the ground. Avoiding stairs is a smart idea (haha). 🙂

A very nice set of doors, and a great story to go with them. Sure beats hiking up and down three flights of stairs.

    1. I completely agree (haha). I saw other buildings where the person toward the top lowered down a basket or bucket. Quite ingenious. Thanks so much, Dan, for the wonderful comments as always! I’m glad you enjoyed the story. 🙂

That’s a great story. When I lived on the 5th floor of a walk up building, my friends would ring my buzzer and I would toss the keys down to them so they could let themselves in–luckily I lived over the front door! Even though I was young I didn’t relish that climb back up. (K)

    1. I love it! Like you, my husband and I live on the 5th floor. The other day I “carefully” dropped his empty backpack down to him because he forgot it (haha).

  7. Beautiful tale. Sad too, maybe the old woman can’t go down the stairs.
    Incredible shot!

    1. Well, she wasn’t elderly (not young either). 🙂 I can relate. Sometimes you just don’t feel like climbing the stairs (haha). I’m glad you enjoyed the shot.
