The Other Side

This piece of flash fiction is my contribution to Dan Antion’s Third Annual Thursday Doors Writing Challenge.  Dan, at No Facilities, invited us to choose a door photo that inspired us and write a story, poem, novel, or anything we wanted to.  The intriguing photo I chose was submitted by Teagan R. Geneviene.

In order to travel through the portal to the other side, you must first have your hearing removed, for on the other side those who live there scream instead of talk.  It has been said that our kind will go insane after too long an exposure.  So, when your ear drums are removed, translators are put in their place.  You can then communicate with those on the other side, for you hear sensical language instead of screaming.

We all must cross the portal to the other side.  Our world is dying, and the other side offers us a chance at survival.  On the day I am to leave, my procedure goes well.  I feel only a pinch.  My translators are installed.  After stepping through the portal, I feel extreme relief when the man on the other side proclaims, plain and comprehensibly, “Welcome to Earth.”

Thank you for stopping by and reading my small story!

  2. I love it, Brenda. People here ‘on the other side’ certainly do scream. I’m delighted that my image collage inspired this from you. Thanks for linking to me too. Hugs.
