Thursday Doors: Paphos in Cyprus

Here is my contribution to the weekly Thursday Doors challenge hosted by Dan Antion over at No Facilities blog.

~~

In March, on our way back to the mainland from Chania on the Island of Crete, my husband and I stopped by Paphos in Cyprus. The ancient city of Paphos is located on the southwest coast by the Mediterranean Sea. The legend is that the goddess Aphrodite was born here.

This photo is of Paphos Castle, a medieval fort that originally guarded Paphos Harbor during the Byzantine Empire.

Paphos is a fascinating place. We saw so many interesting things, but we left a little frustrated as there was much more to see. Maybe another trip at a different time. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy a couple of posts featuring sites and doors we discovered in Paphos!

Mouttalos Mosque in the Turkish neighborhood called Mouttalos.

Church of Panagia Theoskepasti.  The name means “veiled by God” or “protected by God.”

Agia Kyriaki Chrysopolitissa is one of the world’s oldest still-functioning Christian churches in the world dating back to 1500 with services on Sundays and Wednesdays.  The church was built on the site of an earlier 4th century basilica, but the origins go back to the early part of the 1st century.

The pillar in this photo is known at St. Paul’s Pillar.

Agios Theodoros Cathedral

Thank you for stopping by!  Stay safe, stay well.

Always a difficult choice, where to base yourself, but you did at least find something to whet your appetite for more. It looks beautiful, Brenda.

These are wonderful doors, Brenda. I know what it feels like to have to leave a place while there is more to see. Seeing things that have survived so many yeas must be amazing. Thanks for sharing your photos with us.
