Thursday Doors: Porta Pia, Rome, Italy

This week’s door post contribution to the weekly Thursday Doors challenge (hosted by Dan Antion over at No Facilities blog), is from my archives. My husband and I spent a week in Rome back in January of this year. It was cold … but we had a lot of fun and discovered many doors! I hope you enjoy my first installment from Rome.

This is the internal facade of the Porta Pia, one of the northern gates of the Aurelian Walls. The walls were built between 271 AD and 275 AD during the reign of the Roman Emperor Aurelian. The gate was designed by Michelangelo and construction began in 1561. It was his last architectural work, but he died before it was completed.

The outer façade of the Porta Pia (the side that faces away from the city) was designed by Virginia Vespignani.

The statue on the left side of the door is of St. Agnes and the one on the right is of Pope Saint Alexander I.

The view from the outer facade. We passed this way every day on our way to the subway.

Thank you for stopping by. For more doors from all around the globe, visit Dan’s.

You still have blue skies so I can’t feel the cold. A wonderful city, any time of year.

    1. We really enjoyed the crisp skies, and it’s true that they help make it seem less cold. We’ve been to Rome a couple of times and hope to go again. Thanks so much for commenting, Jo. It’s always good to see you. 🙂

What a beautiful day that was, Brenda. I love the pictures of the church. The RC church in the town I grew up in was St. Agnes. I’ve rarely heard that name since I was in my 20s.

I hope you have a great weekend.

    1. It really was! I don’t mind the cold so much if it’s not gray and wet. We saw a few other churches and schools called St. Agnes. She must be a popular saint. Thanks so much for the nice comments, Dan. 🙂

    1. I’m very glad that you enjoyed the photos, Ann. It’s hard for me to pass a beautiful church door without capturing it. It’s a bit of a chore for my husband when he and I are romping around and I have to stop and stop and stop. (haha) Thank you for stopping by!

    1. It was a little cold but crisp, not rainy, so the skies were blue and when you walk you stay warm. 🙂 Thanks so much!
