Thursday Doors: Corfu, Greece

This is my contribution to the weekly Thursday Doors challenge, hosted by Dan Antion over at No Facilities blog.

~~

After leaving Reggio Calabria (last week’s post), my husband and I took a train and an overnight ship to Corfu in Greece.

Corfu (Kerkyra), an island in the Ionian Sea, is a beautiful and fascinating place.

There have been many influences over its extensive lifespan. By way of history, since ancient times, Corfu has been occupied by many countries. The island was once a colony of Corinth. Later Corfu became part of the Roman Empire then the Byzantine Empire. In the 13th century, it was controlled by the Venetians and served as a major port city until 1797.

Much of Corfu’s architecture is influenced by the Venetian rule, featuring narrow streets, arched doorways, and pastel-colored buildings.

For a time, the French took the island then the Russians and Turks in 1799. The French gained control again in 1807 then the English in 1815. The UK gave Corfu, with the other Ionian islands, to Greece. (Above details gathered from Britanica & Lonely Planet)

Thank you for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed a little peek at the island of Corfu. More to come next week.

Some of these islands have had a hard life but you’d never know it from the laid back vibe now. I’d like to be wandering there again.

This looks like such a beautiful place to walk around. I love black doors, but that last door is too wonderful not to be my favorite today.

    1. It really was fun. The last building is my favorite, too, because like you I love a corner building. Thanks, Dan, for your kind comments as always. 🙂
