Thursday Doors: Canet Village, southern France

This is my contribution to the weekly Thursday Doors challenge, hosted by Dan Antion over at No Facilities blog.

~~

For the second week, I’m featuring a trip my husband and I took this summer to Canet-en-Rousillon, a seaside town in southwest France.

One day, we took a short bus trip away from the water and visited Canet Village with its Catalan flair. The Catalan Region located in northeast Spain, was one of Rome’s first possessions. The Catalonians have since moved into other parts including the microstate of Andorra and southwest France and have by and large retained their unique culture. Canet is steep in Catalan history which encompasses Spanish and French history and culture as well as Italian.

The Gothic church of Saint Jacques sits in the center of the village. It was built in the second half of the 14th century, it was remodeled in 1510 and enlarged in 1694.

A side entrance to the church.

The neighborhood around the church.

At the entrance of Canet Village is The Hand Press ~ A symbol of Canet’s intense winegrowing activity in the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th.

Thank you for stopping by! Visit here if you would like to see my first post from Canet.
