Thursday Doors: Collioure, France

This is my contribution to the weekly Thursday Doors challenge, hosted by Dan Antion over at No Facilities blog.

~~

As I mentioned last week, my husband and I have been taking day trips to charming and intriguing towns and cities along the Mediterranean in southwest France. We had a very pleasant day strolling around the city of Collioure.

Collioure is a port city on the Mediterranean Sea, only a few kilometers from the Spanish border. Over two thousand years ago, Collioure was two separate villages. Its ancient history includes influences from Greeks, Romans, and Phoenicians. Over the centuries, it was controlled by various powers, including the Kingdom of Majorca and later the Crown of Aragon. In 1642, French troops captured Collioure, and it was officially ceded to France in 1659 under the Treaty of the Pyrenees.

This is the Château Royal de Collioure. It is a fortress on the waterfront of Collioure that has evolved over centuries. It was originally known as the Castrum Caucoliberi and dates back to 673, during the Visigothic period.

The Saint Vincent chapel is located at the end of the Collioure cove, near the fortress. It was built in 1701 on a shale rock. According to legend, it was on this rock that Saint Vincent was martyred. (Saint Vincent Chapel)

I hope you enjoyed this brief introduction to Collioure. More to come next week. If you would like to see a couple of other locations along the Mediterranean, visit Céret and Canet-en-Roussillon.

We visited in 2015, it’s a charming spot and was delighted to discover I was following in the footsteps of Charles Rennie MacKintosh.

    1. Oh, that’s so nice, Sheree. Collioure and these other charming towns along the Mediterranean have drawn incredible artists over many years. Thank you for giving me a name. I looked him up and did some reading and will be better prepared when we go back (it’s a quick Lio bus trip from where we are at the moment). 🙂 Happy Sunday!
