Thursday Doors: Traboules & Courtyards in Lyon, France

This is my contribution to the weekly Thursday Doors challenge, hosted by Dan Antion over at No Facilities blog.

~~

Lyon has several traboules scattered around in the Old Town of the city. “Traboules” mean “to pass through” in Latin and are hidden passageways that connect one part of Old Town, Lyon with another. Happily, we found one and wove our way through.

It was a nice reprieve on a very hot day. Along the way, we passed through intriguing open courtyards.

It felt like we were walking among the past.

When traversing the passageways, you are to do so silently. It was so quiet inside these tunnels that when I sneezed once, it echoed in the silence, startling those around me.

There are about 200 (traboules) in Vieux-Lyon (Old Town Lyon), 160 on the slopes of Croix-Rousse hill and 130 on the Presqu’île, making a total of 500 traboules in more than 230 of Lyon’s streets. However, only about 80 are open to the public. (Visiter Lyon)

Here is the door to the traboule that we randomly discovered. If you ever visit Lyon, keep a look out. It is well worth finding one or more.

“Please respect the residents’ peace in this passage by crossing it quietly.”

More from beautiful and intriguing Lyon next week!

These are such wonderful images, Brenda. The courtyards look so mysterious. I think I’d like to wander around in there for a long time. Your photos drew me in. I’m picturing a certain character (no names mentioned) who might be hiding around there.
