Never Forgotten

We fell deeply in love when we were young.  We built a family and watched them grow.  We laughed, fought, loved, and cried.  As our backs bent and our minds faltered, we sat together.  Your camaraderie was more than enough for me.  This world of woe spun around, but we hung on until you let go.  I don’t blame you, you were meant to fly.  I cannot bear to remove everything that reminds me of you, so I must move on in search of peace.  You will never be forgotten though.  One day, I will meet you at the shore.

This story is dedicated to my father, and is my contribution to “Friday Fictioneers,” a weekly challenge hosted by the lovely Rochelle Wisoff Fields. With the help of a photo prompt to inspire, we’re to write a 100-word story.  The inspiring photo this week was provided by Dale Rogerson.

I think what struck me the most about this beautifully related story is her courage in the face of her grief and loss to endure, to carry on even if it meant moving away. And that last sentence of steadfast hope really got to me. So well written Brenda.

I can’t imagine what it’s like to lose a life partner. I watched my grandparents and my mom go through it. Everybody handles it differently. I hope you and your dad make it through. Beautifully written.

    1. Thanks so much for your thoughtful comments!! It is true, everyone deals with loss in a different way. We lost my mother last summer while I was stuck in France. I didn’t get to say goodbye and that sadness washes over me occasionally. My parents had been married for 63 years. It’s been difficult for my father, but he is healing with time. Again, thank you so much.

A heartfelt tribute and a lovely way to end. That hope of reuniting one day is probably what gives the one left behind the courage to accept and move on.
